Q & A with former and present KY state directors:
When did the conventions start?
The first convention was held in 1968 based on programs found from early conventions. How many students are involved in the conventions? In the last 4 years around 250 students have participated each year. Why did the creators of the chapter decide to create a branch of the society in Kentucky? The national SHH divided the organization into regions and state chapters to make organization easier. How can a student become eligible for a scholarship? The Kentucky SHH Senior Scholarship was first offered in 2004. Each chapter may enter a maximum of 2 students per level. The students must be an active member of SHH (currently enrolled in Spanish) in good standing. Officer requirements/eligibility The state officers used to include a treasurer and a historian. The treasurer office was eliminated because of restrictions on student officers ability to manage school funds. The treasurer was replaced by the officer-at-large. The office of historian included the responsibility to take photos during the convention and organize those photos in an album to be passed on each year. Somewhere that album disappeared. The historian was also in charge of writing a summary of the state convention. Later the officer name was changed to Webmaster. SHH KY has had a website since around 1998. The webmaster is in charge of social media and internet presence for KY SHH as well as maintaining historical information on the website. Is there an alumni group? Not that I am aware of. How has the logo changed and why? Ms. Del Valle was the President of KY-AATSP from 2012-2014. It was decided that KY AATSP needed a logo and during the 2013 convention a contest was held to design a state logo. The winning logo was approved by the National AATSP. The current SHH logo was redesigned in 2016 and replaces the logo that still appears on the SHH shield. The new logo is supposed to emphasize the idea that the Spanish language is spoken in many countries so the logo and its colors are more diverse and less Spain-specific. |
